Getting started:
Bank Accounts
To open an account you must have your passport with you. Join
one of the larger banks. Westpac, Commonwealth, ANZ or National.
Tax File Number
You need a valid visa to obtain a TFN. You can apply in person
or online at
www.ato.gov.au/individuals. You have 28 days to provide your
TFN to your employer.
Mobile Phones
All major phone companies have pre pay packages. It is necessary
to have a mobile to do agency work.
Medicare
Medicare is the government run health organisation in Australia.
Under reciprocal agreements, travellers from NZ, Sweden, Finland,
Italy, Netherlands,& UK are entitled to immediate treatment.
Those eligible can apply at medicare centres to receive a
medicare card. You need to show your passport and visa when
applying. Medicare can be contacted on 13 20 11.
Getting Around Sydney
The transport system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
